Well, in WinXP I've (almost) stopped using the start menu after installing Launchy.

In Win7 I use the start menu once in a week at most, while I use the... uhm... can't remember the name, but, anyway, that text box that appears when you press the Win key (and that is somewhat similar in behavior to Launchy (and yes it's included in the start menu, but I don't consider it really part of the start menu)) and, sometimes, the desktop.

The start menu is just slow when you can press a key or a combination of keys and then the first chars of the name of the application that you want.
