Well,
I believe I have solved my problem. In the Xmd.h header
file I installed from the xfree86 project (from Dr. Sadiqqi)
has this line commented out.
/* typedef CARD8 BOOL; */
once I uncommented it, aterm compiled like a charm.
Not sure why it was commented out but it seems to be ok
like this.
